  • BULLET FOR MY HEART

I watched as he walked Silently across the street Under dim lights Head bowed to the ground I saw him smoke his cigarette With a shaky hand he put it out Look at me, look at me! He lifted his face Those scars I have grown used to That smile all but gone The look of desperation And the smell of fear Why are you reaching inside your coat? What are you doing? Oh, I know what this is You’ve come to put me down! I can see it in your eyes I can see the guilt I can see the look of a man trapped I told you never to make a deal with the devil, didn’t I? Here we are, are you going to do it? You told me until the end of time I guess you meant Until the end of mine Say something, you coward! Say anything at all! I want to hear the reasons The reasons I am about to fall They found out, didn’t they? Ah, of course They found out that you loved A woman stronger than them It scared them to see How I could break away From their world and their lies From their perfect fantasy And so, as strong men do They cut down what shakes them And they hang it out to dry For everyone to know, and for everyone to fear Well, get on with it! For if you don’t, I will not be silenced I will break their stories apart And tear at their hearts Do it! Stop wasting time! If you have that gun in your hand It means you’ve already chosen You’ve already decided Guess what? I’m not going to fight it For if you are to do this I want you to see The monster you have become I will make you hear the screams The screams of the woman you claim to love And I will haunt your soul As you have taken me, so shall I take you Come on then! Shoot. It’s about time you raise that gun Don’t cry, you did this You created a devil inside and fell for the angel Just like Romeo and Juliet, we fall Just like every tragic romance, we crash Shoot! Kill me, kill our love! You won’t be able to get rid of that demon now They have carved in your heart And torn you apart Because you know that to live yourself I must die And as a coward does, you have come to save you Shoot! I’m waiting I will keep screaming till the very end, you’ll see My last "I LOVE YOU" will haunt you Now shoot! Shoot! Shoot! BANG!

  • "THE KING OF COCAINE"

"I'M A DECENT MAN WHO EXPORTS FLOWERS" Antioquia, Colombia. December 1, 1949. The rise of the wealthiest criminal in history and his sudden fall. Son of a famer and an elementary school teacher, Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, was the third of seven children. They lived in the city of Medellín surrounded by violence and instability. This man would become one of the most notorious and powerful drug lords in the world, and one of the most hunted. Before becoming a man, he started out as a teenage criminal. He would steal tombstones to then sell on to someone else. Later, he progressed to stealing cars, a crime that would land him in jail for the very first time in 1974. His criminal background growing, Escobar found himself involved in the drug smuggling world, a world that was growing more and more in Colombia. After having apparently found his calling with the illegal trafficking of drugs, he founded in 1972 one of the most known drug cartels in history: the Medellín cartel. He positioned himself as the leader of this organization and directed all its businesses which mainly meant the production and sale of cocaine. With his empire growing, Pablo Escobar situated himself and his cartel as the main distributor of cocaine during the 1980s. All this made him the richest criminal in the world, his net worth being around US$30 billion at the time of his death (today that would be about $64 billion). With this money he indulged in all his desires including big mansions like the Hacienda Nápoles, worth $63 million. But he wasn’t considered a criminal by all. In Colombia a lot of citizens saw him as a kind of Robin Hood figure. He started projects to help those less fortunate. As a result of his popularity, he won an election in 1982 to be part of Liberal Alternative movement. He never got too far though, as his own government and that of the US were trying to arrest him. Plus, even with the good deeds done, his bullets or bribes way of making things go away didn’t sit well with most individuals. He was also known for ordering the assassinations of several rivals, politicians and for the killing of hundreds of civilians. One of the most know was ordering the hit that killed presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galán. By 1991, he was being hunted down by the government and finally, he surrendered himself to the authorities. But he had conditions: there was to be no extradition and he was permitted to live in a luxurious prison he built for himself called La Catedral which included a nightclub. Escobar messed up though when he killed two cartel members in that “prison” in 1992, leading to a decision to move him to a normal prison. Having realized this, he escaped. For more than a year, Escobar was in hiding until he was found out the day after his birthday. He fled across the rooftops with his bodyguard but was shot in the gunfight by the Colombian National Police and died. Soon after, his cartel crumbled. Here is a link to a scene depicting the death of Escobar in a series called Narcos. Warning: contents might be disturbing to some viewers. And finally, here is an interview with the son of this criminal that I hope you find interesting:

  • "SCARFACE"

"A SMILE CAN GET YOU FAR, BUT A SMILE WITH A GUN CAN GET YOU FURTHER" Brooklyn, New York. January 17, 1899. The end of a century, the birth of a criminal. A city full of new beginnings, new chances. Barber and seamstress Gabriele and Teresa Capone left their home and found themselves in New York, where they would have 9 children, one of whom would become one of the most feared men of the 20th century: Alphonse Gabriel Capone better known as notorious gangster Al Capone. Teenage Al Capone turned to a life of crime, leading him to meet his lifetime mentor, gangster Johnny Torrio. Around the same time, at 19, Al met the love of his life, Mae Josephine Coughlin, whom he married in 1918. They had one son, Albert Francis “Sonny” Capone. Initially, the young Al Capone live in New York City, where he became involved with the Five Point Gang. During this period, he found himself taken under the wing of renowned mobster Frankie Yale. While working for him, Al Capone earned his nickname “Scarface”, a title that he would despise for the rest of his life. It came to be when Capone, while working at Yale’s Harvard Inn, insulted a woman, leading to his brother, Frank Galluccio, to slash him across the face three different times. Shortly after, in 1919, he left the big city to go and work for crime boss Big Jim Colosimo in Chicago. The latter was later assassinated, in 1920, suspected to have been committed by either Yale or Capone himself to position Torrio as the new boss who would start to take part in the bootlegging business during the Prohibition era. Once Torrio retired and left for Italy, Al Capone took over the Chicago Outfit. He ran gambling, prostitution, and bootlegging across the city. He grew to be feared by many as he gunned down rivals who stood in his way to power. It was said that he was worth about $100 million. The one crime that stands out from all the rest during his time as a crime boss, was the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. This was the execution of seven unarmed members of the Bugs Moran gang. They were lined up against a wall and shot with a machine gun by members of Al Capone’s outfit, who had disguised themselves as cops. Capone was never charged with this crime. (If you want to read more about this crime, here is the link to its Wikipedia Page) He was good at what he did, that can’t be argued. Al Capone was never arrested for murder, he got away with all of them, even when it was clear that he was responsible. They never had proof. When he was finally arrested, he was sent away for tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in prison. He lived out these years in the Atlanta penitentiary and then was transferred to Alcatraz, a new prison at the time. After 8 years in prison, he was released due to his worsening health, caused by syphilis, a disease he had been living with for years. At the age 48, he died of a cardiac arrest in his Florida estate. You can find The Untouchables movie scene here:
